The allegorical popularity contest continues.
I reluctantly joined Facebook last week to learn about 'Platform', Facebook's recently launched application tool.
After accidentally spamming everyone on my AIM list with a request to join Facebook (I do hope my old boss was away from his computer at the time!) I willingly became distracted and signed out.
A few hours later I receive an email saying "Eli has added you to his top friends! You are becoming more popular! Learn more about increasing your popularity!".
I am "becoming more popular"? To whom am I become popular? Is the phrase a callback to the population base of primarily college kids, even though more than 75% of Facebooks users are out of college?
What does it all mean???
In a world of hits, ranks, and diggs, we have the ability to create a popularity contest at large.
If the spawn of user-generated celebrity has produced Tila Tequila, what will Facebook produce? The MIT rocket-science nerd of the 21st century who masquerades as a ornately masked Wii-DJ at night?
Ok so maybe I'm overthinking this. But think about the mainstream. Politicians, celeb-u-tards, all of these God-like and 'righteous' people were created by select groups of people with power. Is it our turn to be the electorate? Will it be worth it?
